How Long Does AC Replacement Take?

analog-clock-face

Taking care of a home requires so much planning and scheduling, on top of all the expenses and worries! Sometimes it is a huge relief just to have more information, so you know what to expect. And when it comes to AC replacement, something we do every day, you probably haven’t been through the process in many years, if ever!

When you’re having your air conditioner replaced, what should you expect? Are there things you can do to be better prepared? What’s involved in the process of AC replacement? Perhaps most importantly, how long should you expect it to take? We’ll tell you everything you need to know about AC installation in Covington.

The Steps of AC Replacement

When it’s time to get a new air conditioner, the process has many parts. Here’s what it will probably look like for you.

  • Deciding: Is it possible to repair your old unit? Would it be worth the cost of repairs? No? The first step in AC replacement is simply deciding that it’s what you need to do.
  • Choosing: What are your considerations about the new system you’ll be getting? What size do you need? How efficient are you hoping it will be? The second step is choosing the specific unit you’ll be having installed.
  • Assessing: Is there anything extra you’ll need to have done in order to make the replacement go smoothly?
  • Scheduling: Make an appointment for your installation, and set aside the entire day just in case it takes that long to get the system installed.
  • Preparing: Some of this, you can do ahead of time to make it easy for your installation techs to access everything they’ll need. Some of this, the technicians will do when they arrive and see the layout and space that they’ll be working with.
  • Removing: The old units, indoors and out, will need to be shut off, disconnected, and hauled out of the way.
  • Positioning: The new units, indoors and out, will need to be brought in and precisely put in place.
  • Connecting: This is a complex system, and everything—refrigerant lines, drainage lines, and electrical wiring—must be carefully connected.
  • Testing: Once things are all set up, your technician will turn the system on and let it run for a bit. This way, they—and you—will be confident that everything is working perfectly.
  • Q and A: This is the perfect time to get all the information you need about how to use the system, how to change the air filter, when maintenance will be needed, and so on.
  • Cleanup: Your technicians will tidy up any packaging or mess and leave your home as neat as it was when they arrived.

Timing Considerations

If you require major modifications, such as a new ductwork installation, in order to be ready for your air conditioner, you may have multiple appointments over multiple days. But in most cases, when an old central AC unit is being swapped out for a new, similar system, it will take less than a day. Sometimes it is as much as eight hours, but it could be as little as four.

To help increase the chances that you’ll have a quicker installation, clear the way from your driveway to both the indoor and outdoor units, making plenty of space to bring units through and elbow room to work on them. And please keep your pets safely secured in another part of your house. Being distracted by their cuteness can slow your technicians down!
