Last month we posted a reminder about getting on the schedule for air conditioning maintenance. Spring has only just officially started, so it’s the ideal time to have this essential air conditioning service in Slidell, LA done.
We’ve talked before about all the benefits of having maintenance done each year, and we’re going to focus on one specifically. But it’s a big one! An annual inspection and tune-up for an AC goes a long way toward preventing the majority of repairs the system may need over its service life.
The majority? Really?
Yes! In fact, studies have shown that more than 50% of all air conditioning system repairs are the fault of lack of maintenance. If your air conditioner has regular maintenance, that means you’ll make more than half of its potential repairs vanish. That is a tremendous amount of money saved, and it also means less inconvenience dealing with a broken air conditioner and trying to get repairs for it. And fewer repairs also helps an AC last longer—and one of those repair problems might end up being “the end” for the AC, the repair that’s too expensive to come back from.
How maintenance keeps these repairs away
We’d like to tell you that there’s some big secret to how maintenance prevents the majority of repairs. But it’s quite basic—technicians perform a series of adjustments and cleanings that remove the strain on parts of the AC that can lead to malfunctions and breakdowns.
Here’s one example: cleaning and lubricating the motors. An air conditioner has several motors vital to its operation: the blower motor that sends air past the evaporator coil to be cooled and then into the ventilation system; the outdoor fan motor that draws air across the condenser coil to release heat and then exhausts the heat outside; and the compressor motor that drives the component responsible for creating the entire cooling cycle in the first place. These motors pick up dust and dirt over time and start to lose lubrication. This causes extra friction and will eventually cause motor burn out. The motors will need to be replaced—and in the case of a burnt-out compressor, the entire AC must be replaced.
And those repairs that do pop up…
Not only does maintenance prevent the majority of repairs, but it also helps to lower the severity of the repairs that do crop up. During maintenance, technicians carefully inspect all parts of the AC to look for any hidden problems that haven’t turned into full repairs yet, but will eventually. The technicians can then take care of the repair when the problem is smaller and hasn’t caused additional strain for other components.
One example is checking on refrigerant pressure. This lets technicians find out if the AC has a refrigerant leak. This problem often starts small, but will put the whole AC in danger if it lasts. Maintenance catches it before it becomes a problem!
