Is a Tankless Water Heater a Good Idea for My Home?

tankless-water-heater

We think tankless water heaters are a great idea in general. That doesn’t mean they’re right for every home, and we’re glad you’re asking yourself this question first rather than running out to have one installed. When replacing a powerful appliance that’s important for the daily well-being of your family, you don’t want to rush.

The best way to know if getting a tankless water heater in Slidell, LA is the right choice is to work with our professionals. We’ll always give you the honest answers you need, followed by superb service.

Although we can’t give you a specific answer about whether a tankless water heater is ideal for your house in this post, we can give an outline of why many homes love their tankless water heaters.

They help save energy

A quick reminder in case you aren’t certain how tankless water heaters work: they don’t store water in a tank and keep it at a steady temperature so it’s ready for use; instead, they heat water as it moves through the unit whenever a hot water tap turns on. Where a standard storage-tank water heater must run regularly to keep the water at the same temperature, a tankless water heater only runs when there’s a demand for hot water. You can expect a tankless water heater to consume far less energy than a storage-tank water heater over its service life.

They last longer

You’ll have more time to enjoy those energy savings with a tankless water heater because the units can last longer than conventional water heaters. A standard tank water heater can last around 12 years, while a tankless water heater can last around 20.

They don’t run out of hot water

If this sounds like a great advantage, you’re right. Because there’s no stored water supply to deplete, a tankless water heater won’t run out of hot water when you have a tap demanding it. The water heater just keeps heating up the water on the way to the tap. The only caveat about this is that a tankless water heater can get overwhelmed and lose energy efficiency if there are multiple taps demanding hot water at the same time. A tankless water heater is often better suited for smaller households where this won’t be a problem. A larger household, however, can opt for more than one tankless unit.

They don’t take up much space

Without a storage tank, a tankless water heater doesn’t take up much space in a home. Many can be mounted on the wall of a garage or utility closet, or even outside if the weather permits. You can free up some important storage space when you replace your old tank water heater with a tankless one.

Are there any drawbacks?

There are a few you may need to consider. Tankless water heaters are more costly to install upfront, they have a longer delay for hot water reaching a tap (although not a huge delay), and installing one may require making some changes to other parts of the plumbing and installing a filtration system.
