My Furnace Is Noisy! What’s Wrong?

person-with-hand-to-ear-and-concerned-expression

So many systems, from a fan to a food processor, will start making odd noises that let you know there’s a problem. Heating systems are no exception. If you’re hearing surprising sounds from your furnace, it’s time to get a professional in to take a look. What could be wrong? What part of your furnace needs repair? We’ll tell you about the different sounds heating systems make and when to get furnace repair in Madisonville, LA from our trusted HVAC technicians.

Rattle

In most cases, a rattling sound from your heating system is caused by a slightly loose component vibrating when the heat is running. This is not a big surprise or a huge problem. Due to the movement and vibration of the furnace, it’s easy for screws to loosen. You might have a panel that needs to be tightened, or a blower fan that’s spinning off-kilter.

The important thing is that it will only be a quick and easy fix if you get the repair done promptly and professionally. If you allow the rattle to continue, it’s far too likely that the loose component would come completely free. It could then crash into other parts of your furnace and do more damage, leading to more costly and complicated repairs.

Groan

Does your furnace sound like it is overtired and complaining? Groaning and grinding sounds could be coming from the blower fan motor. Inside that motor, there are bearings, which keep the parts moving smoothly. Over time (especially if the furnace doesn’t receive annual maintenance) the bearings can wear down. If the bearings aren’t replaced in a timely manner, you may need to replace the motor–a much costlier repair!

Screech

Some furnaces, though not all, have belts that connect the motor to the fan. If that belt stretches, slips out of position, or starts to tear, it can make an alarming sound. Screeching and squealing don’t mean there’s a squirrel or a pig in your furnace. But you do need to get an HVAC technician to fix that belt problem.

Click

A few different things can cause a clicking sound. Most of them are not too deeply concerning, such as a slightly loose component on its way to becoming the source of a rattling sound. But because clicking can come either from an electrical problem or from a cracked heat exchanger in a gas furnace, it’s critical to your safety for the repairs to be completed as soon as possible.

Buzz

Again, this could be as simple as vibration, but it could also be an electrical problem. It’s even possible that a seal is loose, or something is caught in the blower fan blades. Don’t wait until the problem worsens! We’ll be happy to help you determine the root of the problem and get it sorted out right away.
